Set new weight and axle classes on the On-Board Unit!

An OBU with the display showing the axle and weight class
Berlin,

Since 1 January 2019, new tariffs for truck tolls have been in force in Germany. Among other things, the weight class is a parameter for calculating the toll.

It is essential that truck drivers ensure that the weight class is set correctly. Since January 2019, extra attention is required for vehicles which are registered with a gross vehicle weight of 18 tons. Vehicles registered with a gross vehicle weight of 18 tons have exactly this value saved on the On-Board Unit (OBU). Trucks travelling with a trailer must adjust the weight setting on the OBU. ">18 t" will be displayed. The number of axles must then be specified on the OBU; you can select either up to 3 axles or 4 or more axles.

The basis for these settings on the OBU is always the gross vehicle weight indicated in your vehicle documents. To determine the gross vehicle weight of vehicle combinations, the gross vehicle weights of the individual vehicles is added, contrary to the German Road Traffic Registration Regulations. Support and fifth-wheel loads are not included.

Drivers and employers should ensure the correct declaration of the weight class. Anyone who intentionally or negligently fails to pay the toll properly commits an infraction which can be punished with a considerable fine (§ 10 para. 1 no. 1 German Federal Trunk Road Toll Act (BFStrMG)).

The toll rate per kilometre is composed of three partial toll rates: infrastructure costs corresponding to the weight class of the vehicle or vehicle combination subject to toll, the air pollution costs incurred depending on the emission class of the vehicle, and the costs for noise pollution of 0.002 Euro per kilometre.

The weight must be classified in the following weight classes: equal to/greater than 7.5 - 11.99 tonnes gross vehicle weight, equal to/greater than 12 to 18 tonnes gross vehicle weight and greater than 18 tonnes gross vehicle weight. For vehicles and vehicle combinations with a gross vehicle weight of more than 18 tonnes, the number of axles must also be given.

The basis for the introduction of these new rates and the declaration of weight class and number axles is the 5th amendment to the German Federal Trunk Road Toll Act on 4 December 2018.
