2G becomes LTE – replace your OBU for free now!

Before the 2G-OBU goes offline forever: check the need for replacement in the customer portal, make an appointment with a service partner and continue your journeys comfortably with LTE as before.

2G is being switched off

In just over two years, 2G mobile communications will be largely switched off in Germany.

This means the following for the truck toll: OBUs that still transmit via 2G must be replaced in good time by LTE-capable (4G) devices. By having your OBUs replaced free of charge by your service partner, you can ensure that they will continue to collect tolls automatically and conveniently in the future.

Why your OBU needs to be replaced

In your truck, an on-board unit - the OBU - records the route travelled via satellite signal and sends this data to Toll Collect via mobile data. Many of these devices still use the 2G mobile network.

As 2G will be switched off, many of the OBUs installed in the DIN slot will no longer be able to transmit data. They must be replaced with LTE-capable devices.

You can sit back and relax with your windshield OBUs from Toll Collect: these are already transmitting via LTE. They do not need to be replaced.

Why the replacement is starting now

Numerous OBUs are affected by the 2G switch-off. As appointments in the service partner workshops are not available on an unlimited basis, the replacement must begin now. Toll Collect has developed a replacement schedule that enables all customers to get a replacement in good time.

Our goal: Ideally, the OBU replacement should be carried out during a workshop appointment you already have scheduled – without additional downtime for you and without restrictions on toll collection. Talk to your workshop about this!

How to check whether your vehicles are affected

Take a look at the customer portal:

In the overview of your registered vehicles (Menu – Vehicles – Display and edit), you can see for each OBU whether and by when it needs to be replaced.

Attention: The OBU will no longer function after the replacement period has expired. Therefore, please make an appointment with your service partner in good time. If this is not possible, please contact Toll Collect support.

This is how the OBU replacement works

  • Find out in the customer portal
Check which of your vehicles are affected and whether a deadline for replacement has already been set.
  • Make an appointment with your service partner
Contact your service partner workshop and plan the replacement - ideally together with an upcoming workshop visit.
  • Quick replacement in the DIN slot
OBU replacement is usually quick. Your service partner knows exactly what to do.
  • Quick check, then continue driving with LTE as before
As with every OBU installation, the weight (TPMLM) of the vehicle and the number of axles must be set correctly on the OBU before driving off. The operation of the OBU remains the same.

The OBU and the replacement are free of charge for you. You will only incur costs for travelling to and from the location and any possible waiting time.

What happens if you do not exchange in time?

The OBU will be blocked after the period specified for your vehicle in the customer portal has expired. If your OBU is blocked, it can no longer collect tolls.

Avoid blocking of the OBU and make an appointment with a service partner of your choice in good time. If this is not possible, please contact Toll Collect support.

Find a service partner
  • Older OBUs are not equipped with a 4G mobile chip. A software update cannot change this. The OBU must therefore be replaced.

  • No, take a look at the Toll Collect customer portal: In the overview of your registered vehicles (Menu - Vehicles - Display and edit), you can see for each OBU whether and by when it needs to be replaced.

It's simple with Toll Collect's windshield OBUs: they all already communicate over LTE and do not need to be replaced.

  • The OBU and the replacement are free of charge for you. The only costs you will incur are for travelling to and from the event and any downtime.

  • Yes, you can also have a windshield OBU installed instead of a new DIN slot OBU.

  • Please have any OBUs you no longer need removed by a Toll Collect service partner. The OBUs are the property of Toll Collect and must be returned when they are no longer needed.

  • The 5G speed is currently not required for toll collection. With an LTE-capable OBU, your vehicle is equipped for the future.
